Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security method that requires you to provide 2 or more pieces of evidence (or factors) to a login. Typically, the evidence is a security code or confirmation and can be provided via a phone call, text message, or the Microsoft authenticator app. Our MFA service gives you an extra level of security when accessing your Dalhousie email.
Adding your mobile phone number is recommended as a backup to the Microsoft Authenticator app to verify your identity when accessing your Dalhousie email.
Upon graduation, you may find it useful to forward your Dalhousie email to a personal email address. This will negate the need to log in to your Dal account more than the required once per year. Your replies will be from your personal account.
A helpful option is to not ākeep a copy of forwarded messagesā to stay within your allotted account space.
Get started by logging in to your Dalhousie account at , opening Outlook and selecting "Settings".Ģż
You may prefer to create a rule within the web version of Microsoft Outlook to forward your Dalhousie email to a personal email and then delete the email from your Dalhousie email inbox. This is a good practice since your Dalhousie alumni email inbox quota is 5 GB.
To create a forward and delete rule, perform the following steps:
- Log in to your Dalhousie email account at using your username and password and select "Settings" via the gear-shaped icon.
- Select āMailā under the āSettingsā column and choose āRulesā from the list.
- Click the ā+ā sign to add a new rule. Give the rule a name such as āForward and Deleteā.Ģż
- Under āAdd a conditionā, select āApply to all messagesā. Under āAdd an actionā, select āForward toā and add a personal email address. Add a second action and select āDeleteā.

Your Dalhousie alumni email quota is 5 GB. It is good practice to permanently delete old emails from your āDeleted Itemsā folder as well as your āJunk Emailā folder regularly. You can use the following process to manage your email quota effectively:
- Log in to your Dalhousie email account at Ģżusing your Dalhousie credentials. Open the Outlook application.
- Click on the gear-shaped icon at the top right of the Outlook window to display the āSettingsā window. Click the āGeneralā icon on the left side of the settings window and select āStorageā from the options list.

3. Notice that the āStorageā window displays all of the email folders in your Dalhousie email account with the number of messages in each folder and the amount of storage each folder consumes. Locate the āDeleted Itemsā folder icon and select āEmptyā in the āManageā column.Ģż This will display a dropdown list of choices. You can choose between āAllā or time frames between 3, 6 or 12 months and older.
4. Select āOKā on the confirmation window to delete the messages from the selected timeframe.
5. The same process can be used to delete old email from any folder within your account.
